I already talked to the police. Is it too late to stop?

No. You can stop answering questions at any moment — including in the middle of a sentence.
Nothing about answering the first ten questions obligates you to answer the eleventh. Talking is not a door that locks behind you.
Say Out Loud That You Are Done
Do not hint, trail off, or go quiet and hope it is understood. Say it plainly: "I don't want to answer any more questions. I want a lawyer." Then stop. Leave nothing to interpretation — and do not explain why, because an explanation is another answer.
Be Honest With Yourself About What Stopping Fixes
Here is the part nobody wants to hear. Stopping does not erase what you already said. Everything before that moment is still in an officer's report, still on a recording, still available to the State. Stopping limits what comes next. It does not reach backward.
That is a reason to stop now rather than a reason not to bother.
Expect the Pressure to Rise, Not Fall
The minutes right after you say you are done are often the hardest. You may hear that only guilty people need lawyers, that this is your one chance to explain, that a lawyer will slow everything down. You do not have to fill a silence, and you do not owe anyone a reason.
Write Down What You Already Said, Today
While it is fresh, put on paper what you were asked and what you answered, as close to word for word as you can manage — where you were, who was there, how long it lasted. Give it to your lawyer, not to anyone else. Memory degrades within days, and what you actually said matters more than what anyone later remembers you saying.
